LAMM M2.2 Hybrid Power Amplifier
Model M2.2 is the most powerful amplifier in the line of LAMM hybrid and solid-state audio equipment. It is one of the best creations of its designer’s professional career — a result of years of intensive research directed at attaining the most accurate reproduction of recorded music.
The M2.2 is a masterful blend of design and engineering simplicity. It assures the recreation of a three dimensional sound stage in the home, recording studio, etc. without boundaries and limitations. A distinctive feature of the M2.2 is the extraordinary transparency and localization of perceived sound.
It is a pure class A amplifier, with the exception of the output stage which operates in a highly biased A/AB mode. The M2.2 incorporates high-speed MOS-FET transistors in the output stage with no overall feedback. Special switch-selectable biasing circuit maintains the optimal idle current of the output stage for all load conditions between 1-16 Ohms. It is a hybrid design with the one specially selected 6922 vacuum triode.
The M2.2 is conservatively rated to deliver 220 Watts into 8 and 4 Ohms in a highly biased A/AB mode (high and low impedance settings, respectively); 440 Watts into 2 Ohms, and 600 Watts into 1 Ohm (low impedance setting), continuous. The M1.2 can drive any known speaker. The harmonic structure remains intact regardless of the speaker load, while the extreme clarity is maintained at all power levels.
Each amplifier is carefully constructed and hand-crafted with the finest materials and parts currently available, some of which include military graded low noise DALE metal film resistors; PRC wire wound resistors; ELECTROCUBE and ROEDERSTEIN film capacitors; high frequency switching grade CORNELL DUBILIER electrolytic capacitors; BOURNS multi-turn potentiometers; HAMMOND filter chokes; military graded low noise long life vacuum tubes; high quality heavy duty gold-plated binding posts and RCA jacks; gold-plated NEUTRIC XLR connectors, and CAMAC-type coaxial connectors from FISCHER. Special attention was given to designing the toroidal power transformer, which has no mechanical contact with either the transformer cover or the chassis and is suspended in a special encapsulant that almost completely absorbs even the residual mechanical vibrations. This plays a significant role in assuring the absolutely unique clarity and micro-resolution during sound reproduction.
The M2.2 works on all world AC line voltages.
U.S. Patent No. D368,261; U.S. Patent No. 5,470,795; other patents pending.
Here is what the prominent audio critics have said about the M2.2
…Created by the innovative engineer and psychoacoustics researcher Vladimir Lamm, the M2.2 is a no-compromise hybrid vacuum tube/solid-state design that employs the 6922 vacuum triode in the second stage and 12 high-speed MOS-FET output transistors. …As Lamm states in his product description, “the M2.2 can drive any known speaker.”
…The M2.2’s scientific instrument styling belies its ability to bring astonishing life to recorded music. This is an honest amp that sounds like neither a solid-state nor a tube amplifier. In fact, it doesn’t “sound” like anything except the music. …Music emanates from the blackest background with shadings and nuances previously missed by other amplifiers. The sonic difference between most state-of-the-art amplifiers and the Lamm M2.2 is like comparing a marvelous bottle of wine to a benchmark bottle. The contrast is subtle but important.
The M2.2 reproduces music with the highest degree of resolution, exquisitely nuanced spatial layering, the trueness of instrumental timbre. Through the most extreme dynamic ranges, from the quiet shuffling of feet backstage to violently explosive orchestral crescendos, recordings are delivered so accurately and effortlessly that the listener is afforded the opportunity to forget about everything but the music.
Jay Fisher, The Robb Report (June, 2005)
…The Lamm M2.2 represented a small but, at these levels of performance, significant advance in virtually every aspect of sonic performance over the M2.1, at least as I remember the earlier amplifier.
…The M2.2 sounded nearly identical to the M1.2 Reference about 90% of the time, which is not surprising — the amps’ circuits are essentially identical, and the upgrades from .1 to .2 status are the same in both amps. It was the 10% of the time that I heard differences that showed how small variations can matter.
…The M2.2 and the M1.2 Reference both sound marvelously true to life, both run hot, and both are superbly built yet easy to manage and live with. [However]…some speakers need the sheer might offered by the M2.2. If you have big planars or are playing big box speakers of only moderate efficiency in a large room, twice the power shoul definitely factor into your considerations. The extra whomp that the M2.2 offers will be necessary in a lot of systems. Not that you’ll give up very much if you choose the M1.2 Reference, or will even give it up very often — there’s no such thing as a “second best” from Lamm. This is a no-lose choice.
Paul Bolin, Stereophile (March, 2005)
..I don’t know if the Lamm M2.2 is the best power amplifier in the world, because I have not heard all the power amplifiers out there. But, I can say that it is one of the best audio products I have ever heard, period. It is priced like a Maserati, has conservative looks as does a Maserati, and performs at a level like a Maserati. I simply can’t imagine anything sounding better than this.
