The Arcona series features a perfect compromise between price and sound quality. Equipped with all the technologies of the Berlina series we offer a wide range of very interesting loudspeakers for customers who want to start into the unique world of HighEnd Audio. From the small bookshelf Arcona 40, a highpass-filtered 2-way system, to the tall floorstanding Arcona 200, an elaborate 4-way system, the technical solutions lead to a natural and dynamical sound which is outstanding in each class.

Unique worldwide: symmetrical crossovers with ultrasteep slopes

The human ear can detect 10 octaves reaching from 16 Hz to 16.000 Hz. As there are totally different requirements for bass and highs response it makes total sense to divide the audible spectrum into several parts and use several specialized drive-units to reproduce the whole audible spectrum. To coordinate the interaction between the different drivers a frequency crossover is needed which allocates each frequency range to its corresponding drive-unit. The problem is that the separation between the single frequency ranges is not infinitely steep but very flat! This results in a big frequency overlap of the single units.

As all standard crossovers work with a slope of 6 dB/octave only it appears that there is an overlap region where the different drive-units radiate simultaneously even though they are totally different in size and on different geometrical places at the speaker baffle. It is quite obvious that this overlap leads to distortions in amplitude and phase and thus changes the impulse and frequency response of the whole loudspeaker to the worse!

Within the last years we have developed a new analogue crossover technology which is able to create a phase-linear filter with a slope of more than 50 dB/octave. This is very, very close to the theoretical ideal of an infinite slope! So the woofer radiates bass, the midrange driver mids and the tweeter only highs. Minimum overlap appears! Impulses stay impulses!

Moreover, our crossovers are built up symmetrically so that the electrical interaction between the loudspeaker’s electro-magnetic feedback to the driving amplifier is significantly reduced. This leads to an amazingly clean and transparent sound

Kicking Bass and Smooth Mids – The XPulse Diaphragm

Onl hard diaphragms can exactly follow the electrical impulses of an amplifier to generate an acoustical wave-front which produces music in our heads. On the other hand no each hard material is suited as many hard material have bad resonances and sound cancellations within the midrange passband. Therefore many properties of materials have to be considered to get the perfect loudspeaker diaphragm.

Thus we constructed our XPulse diaphragm: hard enough to reproduce mids with high resolution but damped enough to give the smooth, natural sound which pleases our ears. Hard aluminium shaped to a stiff cone with a damping polymer on its back – that’s the composition which gives perfect behavior. By the perfect shape of the aluminium diaphragm we do not need a dust cap for stiffening for our 7″-drive-units. Another reason for the excellent performance!

And so our Arcona drive-units belong to the most sophisticated loudspeakers in the world. So, please, listen to these loudspeakers and reach a new level of music reproduction in HighEnd Audio!

Improving the perfect – our new Gauder Akustik Air-Motion-Transformer Tweeter

All loudspeakers of our Arcona series use our newly designed Air-Motion-Transformer tweeter based on the design principle of Oscar Heil. An air-motion-transformer works like an accordion: a wire-plated foil is folded like an accordion and encloses air in these pockets. If a ac-voltage (music signal) is applied to the wires, magnetic fields are created around them and interact with the strong permanent magnets produced by FeNdB (Iron-Neodymium-Boron) magnets. With the Lorentz-force acting the pockets are opened and closed in the rhythm of the music signal and press out the air with extreme high velocity. Thus the efficiency of these drivers is very high compared to normal dome tweeters and the acceleration of the air is 4 times higher than the movement of the pockets.

Still there are more secrets behind this principle, of course, but the basic function description already shows that sucha tweeter is of highest quality for reproducing highs. And so it is the ideal complement to our woofers and midranges with the XPulse diaphragms.

WBT-Nextgen-Binding Posts – the Best of the World Market’s Leader

Binding posts connect the cables from the amplifier to the loudspeaker. This is not trivial. In fact it is one of the most important connections of the whole system. High currents are driven by the amp to the speaker to supply the energy and the feedback from the loudspeaker to the amp must not have any reduction as the amp has to control the speaker’s behavior.

So these binding posts have big influence on the sound of the whole system. We therefore made a lot of listening tests with different binding posts from different suppliers. And one product finally made it: the new WBT Nextgen connectors! It was clearly audible that they had the least influence on sound and dynamics. Another fact that shows you how carefully our Arcona line was designed and developed.

Sophisticatedly manufactured, Free of Resonances – A New Class of Loudspeaker Cabinet Design

It is a well-known fact that all loudspeaker cabinets have big influences on the total loudspeaker behavior and reproduction prroperties. Cheap cabinets kill the sound, cheap cabinets look ugly, cheap cabinets are cheap and useless for music!

In many extended research procedures we could show that the drop-shaped cabinet is best for audio reproduction. It has least reflections and no diffraction effects from edges and corners. So no unwanted sound cancellations occur like known from all other cabinet shapes.
